PreservationWorks - Inspiration to Preservation
On Saturday June 1st, the LACB co-hosted a panel with PreservationWorks at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. We learned that preservation comes in many forms and discussed the different ways that developers, locals, architecture aficionados, and even urban explorers can come together to support historic preservation.
We heard from people involved with various Kirkbride Hospitals and other historic properties around the country including Greystone, The Ridges, Hudson River State Hospital, Danvers State Hospital, Westborough State Hospital, Kings Park, Cressen Sanatorium & Prison, Buffalo Central Terminal, and of course, the Richardson Olmsted Campus.
We were excited to welcome Monica Pellegrino Faix from the Buffalo Central Terminal (and former ED of the Richardson Olmsted Campus), as well as Joe Recchie, CEO of the Community Building Partners, from the Athens, Ohio Ridges project to discuss adaptive reuse at these historic properties.

Kirkbride on Kirkbrides
The Lipsey Architecture Center Buffalo in partnership with PreservationWorks hosted a presentation by Dr. Kirkbride at the Burchfield Penney Art Center.

Dr. Robert Kirkbride (spokesperson for PreservationWorks, Professor of Architecture and Product Design, Parsons School of Design and a relative of Thomas Story Kirkbride) discussed the complex histories of Kirkbride Plan hospitals, highlighting the historical significance of their architecture and landscape design, and shared recent examples of adaptive reuse and memorialization at several Kirkbrides across the U.S., including Buffalo's Richardson Olmsted Campus.
